People always want to know how the reunions got started, why we have them and why we keep it going. To explain that I’ll have to go back to 1998.
In 1998 my husband and I got our first computer. After I figured out how to turn it on and navigate from one program to another I signed up for the internet. My husband wasn’t happy with this and I had to get him interested. I knew that he had been wondering what happened to the guys he served with in Vietnam so I looked up some sites where he could do some searching. He found one person and then another and he was hooked.
The guys he found wanted to come down to Georgia and go fishing. More people heard about the fishing trip and they wanted to come too. We ended up with 36 people coming so we called it a reunion. Everyone had such a great time they wanted to do it again the next year and it hasn’t stopped yet.
To see these men get together for the first time in many years is wonderful. To help the families we honor find closure is the most wonderful feeling in the world. Yes, there are tears but there is also laughter and joy. It is well worth the time and effort it takes throughout the year to keep it going.
The reunions are not like some of the other ones you may have attended. We stay in cabins, motel rooms, RV’s, and campers. We have a big tent that we gather under and we eat outside, field mess style. Whole families come and make a vacation out of it. There are no organized activities except for Saturday.
On Saturday afternoons we honor one or more families of men who were KIA in Vietnam. The families are presented with shadow boxes that contain the flag and medals of the deceased family member. We have a chaplain, a brass band, and a color guard to assist in the ceremony. It is a truly moving time and we invite you to come and join us.
